Mohawk Valley Community College’s women’s and men’s basketball team will hit the court for a good cause by hosting the 17th annual Torchia Classic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 3, 4, and 5, in the Jorgensen Athletic and Event Center at the Utica Campus.
The men’s portion of the tournament opens Friday at 6 p.m. when Rockland Community College takes on New York International Academy. At 8 p.m., the MVCC Hawks will play North Country Community College. The action continues on Saturday with the consolation round at noon and the championship round at 2 p.m.
The women’s portion of the tournament will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday with Monroe Community College playing Schoolcraft Community College, followed by the MVCC Hawks playing North Country Community College at 7 p.m. The action continues on Sunday with the consolation round at noon and the championship round at 2 p.m.
The Torchia Classic benefits the Anthony Torchia Memorial Scholarship, named in memory of 19-year-old Anthony Torchia, who died in a tragic car accident on May 6, 2000. The Anthony Torchia Memorial Scholarship provides financial assistance to deserving students in the Electrical Engineering curriculum.
Tickets are $3 for each two-game session, or a tournament pass can be purchased for $5. For MVCC students with ID, the cost is $1.
